1. Introduction
Fudoshin Karate is committed to maintaining the highest standards of ethical conduct, respect, and safeguarding in all areas of training and instruction. This policy outlines the values and responsibilities expected of all students, instructors, assistants, and volunteers involved with the club.
2. Club Ethos
Fudoshin Karate teaches traditional Shotokan karate in a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment. We welcome students aged 6 years and above, including children, teens, adults, and families. The club promotes personal growth, discipline, and lifelong learning through karate practice.
3. Affiliation and Governance
Fudoshin Karate is affiliated with the British Karate Association (BKA), which is recognised by the English Karate Federation (EKF) and the World Karate Federation (WKF). We follow safeguarding guidelines set by the BKA and national best practices in martial arts instruction.
4. Safeguarding Commitment
- The club’s Safeguarding Officer is Allison Calthorpe, Senior Instructor.
- All instructors hold an Enhanced DBS check. All volunteers working with children and vulnerable adults are also required to have a current DBS in place.
- We follow guidance from the NSPCC Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) where appropriate.
5. Responsibilities of Instructors and Volunteers
- Provide a safe, structured, and respectful training environment.
- Uphold the values of karate: respect, integrity, humility, and discipline.
- Never use physical punishment or degrading treatment.
- Avoid any inappropriate physical contact or behaviour.
- Treat all students equally, regardless of age, ability, gender, background, or ethnicity.
- Report any safeguarding concerns promptly to the Safeguarding Officer or Club Leader.
6. Responsibilities of Students
- Show respect to instructors, fellow students, and the dojo environment.
- Follow instructions and dojo etiquette at all times.
- Attend training with appropriate attire and a positive attitude.
- Never use karate techniques to harm others outside the dojo.
- Commit to regular training and uphold the spirit of traditional karate.
7. Code of Conduct for Parents and Guardians
- Support your child’s training with encouragement and punctual attendance.
- Raise concerns or questions directly with instructors, respectfully and privately.
- Respect the decisions of instructors regarding grading and class discipline.
- Allow your child to take responsibility for their progress and learning.
