Jiu Jitsu

Jiu Jitsu is an ancient martial arts form that primarily focuses on disabling one’s opponent rather than defending oneself from their attack or even actively attacking them. In fact, The word jujutsu actually means “The art of gentleness.” The overall concept of jiu jitsu evolved around the idea of accelerating an opponent’s fall through redirection and body weight redistribution.
This martial arts style was derived by infusing techniques used in ancient Japan that were used to defeat attackers in armor which was deemed nearly impossible through the use of striking techniques alone. Hence, the heavy amount of throwing, joint locking, and immobilization techniques that exist in Jiu Jitsu. This also explains the high amount of evasion, off-balancing, and overall escape tactics used in Jiu Jitsu as well. The art of Jiu Jitsu went on to influence the styles of: aikido, bartitsu, judo, brazilian jiu jitsu, and sambo among others.
